Christmas extra pay in Spain (paga extra): contributions and IRPF (2026)

The Christmas extra payment (paga extra de Navidad) is a legal right under the Workers' Statute, and your collective agreement sets the amount. On the December payslip it usually comes as its own earnings line, with no extra Social Security and your usual IRPF percentage.

A legal right, with the amount set by agreement

Article 31 of the Workers' Statute (Estatuto de los Trabajadores) gives you at least two extra payments (pagas extraordinarias) a year: one at Christmas and one in the month set by the collective agreement (convenio colectivo) or by agreement with worker representatives. The convenio sets the amount: sometimes base salary only, sometimes base salary plus seniority or other complements. It also sets the accrual period (yearly or half-yearly). If you joined part way through, you get the share for the time worked, and if you leave, the pending share goes into your final settlement (finiquito).

12 or 14 payments: what changes

With 14 payments, the extra comes separately, usually in December (the other in June or July). With 12 payments, where the convenio allows the extras to be spread (prorrateadas), each payslip includes one sixth of an extra payment (two payments over 12 months) and December brings nothing additional. Yearly gross pay, contributions and IRPF for the year are the same either way. Only the timing differs: more each month when spread, or two larger payslips when not.

Why the extra pay carries no extra contributions

Your monthly Social Security contribution base already includes a proportional share of the extra payments, even when they are paid separately. That is why the common contingencies base in the payslip footer is higher than your monthly salary. In the month the extra is paid, Social Security is the same as in a normal month: if the deduction doubles in December, ask why. The 2026 employee rates (6.50% in total on a permanent contract) are in our Spanish payslip guide.

IRPF on the extra pay and the December payslip

Your employer sets your withholding rate from your expected pay for the whole year, extras included, and applies it to everything paid that month. There is no special rate for the extra. If December looks expensive, it is for another reason: the employer recalculated (regularizó) your rate because you earned more than expected (a bonus, overtime, a raise) or your personal details changed, and the tax still due is spread over the few payslips left. The annual return (declaración de la renta) settles it: any excess comes back, any shortfall is paid.

A worked example and what to check

Roughly: on 2,000 EUR a month in 14 payments, your monthly contribution base is 2,333.33 EUR (2,000 plus 333.33 of extras) and you pay about 151.67 EUR in contributions every month, December included. If your IRPF rate is 15%, the 2,000 EUR extra carries 300 EUR of withholding. Check that the extra includes the items your convenio lists, that it is pro-rated if you did not work the whole period, that contributions are not charged twice, that you are not paid it again in December if you are on 12 payments, and that the IRPF rate matches other months or has a reason. Questions people ask

Can my employer drop the Christmas extra pay?

No. At least two a year are required by law. The convenio can set the amount and allow them to be spread over 12 payslips, but not remove them: on 12 payments, the extra is already inside your monthly pay.

Why is more IRPF withheld in December?

Your employer recalculated your rate, usually after a bonus, overtime or a raise during the year, and the adjustment falls on the last payslips. The extra payment itself carries the same rate as the rest.

I was on sick leave this year. Do I get the full extra pay?

It depends on your convenio. Many guarantee the full payment during temporary incapacity, others reduce it. Check the article on extra payments in your agreement.
