Your Belgian payslip explained, line by line (2026)
A Belgian payslip works in three steps: gross pay minus 13.07% social security gives taxable pay; taxable pay minus withholding tax and the special social security contribution gives net pay. A few lines are then added or taken off, such as expenses, meal vouchers or a company car contribution.

Social security (ONSS / RSZ)
Employees pay 13.07% of gross pay. For blue-collar workers (ouvriers / arbeiders) the base is 108% of gross, because their holiday pay comes later from a holiday fund instead of from the employer. On low wages the work bonus (bonus à l'emploi / werkbonus) reduces this contribution and shows as its own line. The employer pays a larger contribution of its own on top, which is not taken from you.
Withholding tax
The précompte professionnel / bedrijfsvoorheffing is an advance on your income tax, calculated from official scales on your taxable pay. It takes your family situation into account (dependent children, a partner with no or low income) and includes a flat 7% for local tax. For 2026 income, tax is 25% up to 16,720 EUR, 40% up to 29,510 EUR, 45% up to 51,070 EUR and 50% above, and the first 11,180 EUR is tax-free. The final bill comes with your tax return the following year, so the monthly amount is an estimate: a refund or a balance to pay is normal.
Special social security contribution
A separate line, the cotisation spéciale de sécurité sociale / bijzondere bijdrage voor de sociale zekerheid, is withheld every month once your pay passes a threshold. The final amount depends on your whole household's income for the year and is settled in the tax return.
Holiday pay and year-end bonus
White-collar employees (employés / bedienden) keep their normal salary during holidays and also receive a double holiday pay of 92% of a monthly salary, usually in May or June. Blue-collar workers receive their holiday pay from a holiday fund, outside the payslip. Most joint committees also give a year-end bonus, often a full month's salary in December. Both are taxed at a special, higher withholding rate, so you keep a smaller share than of a normal month's pay.
Meal vouchers, company car and indexation
Since 1 January 2026 a meal voucher can be worth up to 10 EUR, of which the employer pays at most 8.91 EUR; your share, at least 1.09 EUR a voucher, is deducted. A company car's benefit in kind (avantage de toute nature / voordeel alle aard) is added for tax but not for social security, then taken off again; any personal contribution you pay reduces it. Salaries follow the cost of living automatically, at dates set by each joint committee (January for most white-collar employees in joint committee 200).
What to check every month
Your joint committee (commission paritaire / paritair comité) and the pay scale for your job and seniority; the minimum wage (2,189.81 EUR gross a month from age 18 since 1 April 2026) or your sector's higher minimum; the latest indexation applied; meal vouchers against days worked; your family situation in the withholding; overtime and its premium. Payslop runs these checks for free.

Questions people ask
Why did I get a tax bill when tax is withheld every month?
The withholding is a flat-rate estimate. Extra income, a local tax rate above 7%, the special social security contribution or a change in your partner's income can all make the final bill higher. You can ask your employer to withhold more each month.
Are meal vouchers taxed?
No, as long as the legal conditions are met: one voucher per day actually worked, your share of at least 1.09 EUR, and the maximum values.
Is the employer's social security on my payslip?
Sometimes as an information line, but it is never deducted from you. It adds roughly a quarter on top of your gross pay.
